The Prayer of a Simple Man

i have never been
nor whilst i be
a religious man
that isn’t me

yet, today i find
myself praying
against my nature
against my belief

whomever you may be
whatever you may be
i ask of you
i beg of you

forgive this simple man
he has not done right
inside he cries
unable to comprehend

oh lord, it was an accident
oh lord, hear my prayer
we never spoke before
but give me a sign you might be there

take my breath
my soul
my heart
my life

take it, and give it to her
a child so small
so unaware
so much promise

lord, it wasn’t her fault
she didn’t know what the colors mean
adults know these things
children don’t know these things

mend her bicycle
give her life
let her grow and love
and let me die instead

oh lord if you are real
if you are here
if you have mercy
if you truly do love

you’ll take this simple man
and let an angel live
you’ll take me from existance
and let the child live

oh lord, i am a simple man
i do good by my hand
i work hard for my family, my land
but this i cannot mend

take me, good lord, the spirit of good
take me, so she might live
so she might grow
so she might one day love as i have loved

my kids are grown
my wife and i are old
we have had a good life
take what is left of mine, and give it to her.

i have never been
nor whilst i be
a religious man
that isn’t me

yet, today i find
myself praying
against my nature
against my belief

whomever you may be
whatever you may be
i ask of you
i beg of you

forgive this simple man
he has not done right
inside he cries
unable to comprehend
